Derek Handley is a futurist and entrepreneur who is passionate about shaping a better New Zealand. Through Aera Foundation, he invests in companies and causes tackling social issues in imaginative ways. He is Chief Innovation Officer at company-builder Human Ventures, co-founding industry-changing ventures alongside exceptional entrepreneurs. Before this, he co-founded The B Team with Sir Richard Branson, a non-profit comprised of global leaders advancing better ways of doing business for people and planet. He has invested in and helped found multiple companies in digital media and technology. Derek was named in the 'Silicon Alley 100' most influential technology people in New York, for building The Hyperfactory which was among the first to help global brands navigate the mobile world. The company was started in Auckland six years before the iphone was invented and acquired by Time Inc/Meredith Corporation in 2010. Derek is also the founding General Partner of Aera VC, on the board of Sky Television (NZX: SKT); an Adjunct Professor at AUT, was a formative member of the Air New Zealand Sustainability Advisory Panel (NZX:AIR); and a former New Zealand EY Young Entrepreneur of the Year. As an aspiring astronaut with Virgin Galactic, Derek is hoping to rocket off to space in the coming years.
